Whitby and the North York Moors from York
Whitby brings together the coast and a journey through the North York Moors. From York you can choose a guided day trip or plan an independent journey by bus. The two guided options differ in their railway arrangements, so read the chosen date and inclusions closely. Build time into your wider York itinerary for the journey and check the departure point before the day begins.

Compare guided day trips
On one excursion a steam railway journey is optional and costs extra. On the other, the train ride is offered only on selected dates from April to October. Check the actual date and option before making the railway the centre of your plans. A visit to Whitby does not automatically include admission to Whitby Abbey; check the inclusions of the specific excursion and arrange any separate entry you want. Transport and the guided itinerary give structure to the day, while the exact stops depend on the product.
Coastliner 840 to Whitby
Coastliner 840 links York with Whitby via Malton, Pickering and Goathland. Check the current timetable, stops and connections for both directions before travelling. A service notice for 19 October to 4 November 2026 describes a diversion towards Leeds between Fulford and Tadcaster, with some stops omitted. It does not mean every journey towards Whitby is diverted, but it can affect a return or onward connection. Check current notices for your own journey.
Nature, dogs and path safety
On many open access areas of moorland dogs are excluded and must remain on public rights of way. From 1 March to 31 July, keep dogs on a short lead under 2 metres on moorland; use a short lead near livestock. Coastal paths can run close to high, unguarded cliffs, so choose a route that suits your group and pay attention to the edge. After the August 2025 fire, rights of way and open access on Fylingdales Moor reopened on 5 December 2025. The national park continues to warn about exposed ordnance: keep to paths, do not touch suspicious metal objects, note the location and call police on 999.
Whitby Abbey and your return
Whitby Abbey has date dependent admission options. Check the calendar and ticket conditions if you want to visit, and leave enough time to return to your tour meeting point or bus stop. Weather, walking conditions and the available daylight can affect how much you can comfortably fit in. Back in York, a shorter city walk or a river cruise can complement a full day outside the city.
Make the most of your time
Start by deciding what matters most to your group. A fixed departure gives a day structure, while an independently planned visit gives you more control over how long you spend at each stop. Read the itinerary and the meeting instructions together: a central meeting point and a hotel pickup are different arrangements, and a ticket for one activity does not automatically cover another attraction. If you have an access requirement, contact the relevant operator about the route, vehicle or venue before booking.
York offers several ways to combine a visit with time outdoors. Keep a little space between bookings so a delayed journey or a longer stop does not make the next activity difficult to reach. Check the day’s weather and any current travel notices, then carry the booking details with you. For a trip outside the city, pay particular attention to the return time and any seasonal timetable. For a city activity, find the actual starting point rather than relying on the general name of the attraction. These small decisions make it easier to enjoy the experience at your own pace.
