York museum choices for your day

A York museum visit can be planned around the subjects that interest you most. The National Railway Museum focuses on railways, York Castle Museum on social history, and Yorkshire Museum on archaeology and collections. The Undercroft adds another perspective beneath the Minster. Each has its own admission arrangements, so leave time to check the calendar and any exhibitions that matter to you. For context before you go, explore the history of York Minster and our guide to things to do in York.

Start with the collection that most appeals to your group, then consider how much time you want for the rest of the city. A museum day can be combined with the cathedral, but opening times and access arrangements vary. Check the individual venue's current information before setting out, particularly if your plans depend on an exhibition or step free access.

National Railway Museum: two entrances

General admission to the National Railway Museum is free. Its collections include Mallard and a Japanese bullet train. Station Hall has reopened, and Great Hall and Station Hall have separate entrances connected by an outdoor route. Follow the signs or the museum map when moving between them. The museum normally opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30, and closes from 24 to 26 December. Check its daily calendar for changes.

Advance booking is recommended; walk up admission is also available, with a possible wait. Special attractions such as Wonderlab are separate from free general admission. For a step free approach from the station, use the front exit and the route via Station Rise, Marble Arch and Hudson Boulevard; the rear station approach has steps. Station Hall takes card payments, while Great Hall accepts cash and cards.

A city pass for a wider itinerary

If you plan to visit several attractions, a city pass is an option to compare with individual tickets. The pass lists more than 35 attractions and includes a bus and a cruise. Check its current inclusions and validity against the places you actually intend to visit before deciding. Free general admission at the railway museum does not require a pass.

For the cathedral itself, compare the separate York Minster tickets and plan around its opening hours. The pass is a way to organise a wider itinerary, while the individual museums each publish their own ticket conditions.

Castle Museum and Yorkshire Museum

York Castle Museum brings together Kirkgate, period rooms, the Sixties and the Debtors’ Prison. The listed adult ticket is £18; children aged 5 to 16 pay £10.80, with other reductions and family tickets available. Tickets are valid for 12 months. Advance booking is recommended on Saturdays and during school breaks. Check the current calendar and eligibility for concessions before purchasing.

Yorkshire Museum has an adult ticket listed at £10 and a £6 ticket for children aged 5 to 16, with concessions and conditions for eligible children. Its ticket is valid for 12 months. Check its day by day opening information before choosing a date, especially on a Tuesday. Intermittent lift problems can affect access; contact the team for assistance and discuss your route before visiting.

Undercroft and more of York

The Undercroft Museum beneath York Minster presents archaeological remains, interactive displays and historic objects including the Horn of Ulf and York Gospels. It is included in general sightseeing admission to the cathedral. Allow time for the building as well as the museum, and check the Undercroft timetable separately because its hours can be narrower than the main visit window.

JORVIK Viking Centre is another option for Coppergate archaeology and Viking artefacts. Rather than trying to cover every collection in one day, choose a subject, check the venue calendar and leave a little flexibility for travel between stops. Our transport guide helps with the station approach and the city centre.
