York Minster Evensong and cathedral worship

York Minster Evensong is an evening service in a working cathedral. Choral Evensong is usually scheduled Tuesday to Saturday at 17:30 and Sunday at 16:00. Occasionally Evening Prayer is spoken instead, so check the calendar for the service on your chosen date. You are welcome whether or not you belong to the Church of England or have attended a service before.

Worship, private prayer and lighting a candle are free. Tell the welcome desk that you are attending a service. Booking is normally unnecessary, although some large services have different arrangements. Around Advent and Christmas, capacity can be reached, making the individual event listing especially useful.

Allow a separate window if you also want to explore the building as a visitor. The opening hours guide covers sightseeing, while tickets explains admission to the cathedral and Undercroft. Free access to worship does not promise a full sightseeing visit, museum or tower access.

Continue with a city walk

A separate city walk beginning at the Constantine statue can be an optional addition after worship. Check its departure time against the service you choose. It is a city tour, not a ticket for Evensong; arrange your sightseeing admission separately if you also wish to explore the cathedral.

The guided city walk can complement an Evensong visit, but it is not a service ticket.

What to expect from Evensong

A service is an opportunity to participate in the worship of the cathedral rather than a timed tour of its rooms. The schedule distinguishes Choral Evensong from occasions when Evening Prayer is spoken. If hearing a choir matters to you, look at the service entry before deciding which day to attend rather than assuming the same music every evening.

You do not need prior knowledge of the service to be welcome. Give yourself time to arrive, speak to the welcome desk and settle in. If you have questions about access or a particular service, check the cathedral's information for that date. Special events can follow different arrangements from the regular schedule.

Morning Prayer and Eucharist

There are other ways to join worship during the day. Morning Prayer is normally at 07:30 from Monday to Friday and at 08:00 on Saturday. Sunday Matins is sung at 10:00. Eucharist is normally at 07:50 and 12:30 from Monday to Saturday, with a sung Eucharist at 11:00 on Sunday. Consult the calendar before travelling because the day's programme can change.

These services serve a different purpose from sightseeing. If your interests include the Great East Window and the museum, reserve time during the visitor opening window too. The history guide introduces the building and its earlier phases, while the travel guide helps you plan the route.

Sunday livestream and seasonal services

The Sunday 11:00 Eucharist and 16:00 Evensong are also livestreamed. This offers a way to follow worship when attending from elsewhere. For an in person visit, check the current service listing rather than relying on a livestream schedule to determine entry arrangements.

Advent and Christmas services can attract more people, and a small number of larger services have special booking arrangements. Check the entry for the specific event, including whether a reservation is needed and when to arrive. Leave flexibility around the service if you are combining it with a sightseeing ticket, a meal or an onward journey.

The cathedral is a place of worship as well as a historic building. Approach the service as a shared occasion, allow others space and follow any directions given by staff. You can then enjoy the city at your own pace, perhaps with a walk through the centre or a separate visit to the cathedral at a suitable time.

Evensong questions

Is worship free?

Yes. Tell the welcome desk you are attending a service. Special large services may have separate booking arrangements.

Must I belong to the Church of England?

No. People are welcome without belonging to the church or knowing the service beforehand.

Is there a choir every evening?

Check the service calendar. Evening Prayer is sometimes spoken instead of Choral Evensong.
