York Minster opening hours for sightseeing

York Minster opening hours depend on whether you are visiting the cathedral as a sightseer or attending worship. The usual sightseeing entry begins at 09:30 from Monday to Saturday, with last admission at 16:00. On Sunday sightseeing starts at 12:45. Check the calendar for your date before setting out, especially for the final admission and any changes caused by services or events.

The cathedral recommends allowing at least about two hours for a visit. That gives you a useful starting point when planning the nave, Chapter House and Undercroft, although the time you spend is your choice. For admission options and the separate tower charge, see our guide to York Minster tickets. The getting there guide helps with the journey from the station.

Sunday sightseeing tickets should be booked ahead. The Sunday window is shorter than the usual weekday window, so check the day's admission and closing information together. A service and a sightseeing visit are distinct activities: allow enough time for each if you want to attend both. Our Evensong guide explains the worship schedule.

A separate sightseeing visit

A bookable cathedral visit can fit into a wider day in York. Check the date and the terms shown for the option you select, and use the cathedral calendar to plan the rest of your day. The offer is a sightseeing visit, so do not assume that it provides a particular early entry time.

Undercroft and daily changes

The Undercroft Museum is included in general admission, but its opening window can be narrower than the time available in the cathedral. For example, the calendar for 1 November 2026 listed the Undercroft from 13:15 to 15:15. That is an example for that date, not a timetable for every Sunday. Look up both the cathedral and museum information for your own visit.

Inside the Undercroft, archaeological remains and objects tell a longer story of the site. If it is a priority, leave enough time for it rather than treating the final admission time as the moment to start a full visit. The history of York Minster provides context for what you will see.

Tower availability and access

The Central Tower is a separate choice, subject to weather and capacity. It costs £6 per person, has 275 steps and is open to visitors aged eight and over. Narrow spaces and uneven steps make the climb demanding. Check availability and the current booking instructions for your date; do not assume a tower place comes with a sightseeing offer.

The main cathedral areas have level, ramped or lift access, while the tower is not wheelchair accessible. If step free access is important to you, check the current arrangements and lift status before travelling. A carer accompanying a visitor can enter free, and the booking team can help with reservations.

Bags and services

Rolling cases and bags larger than hand luggage are not permitted. Plan where to leave larger luggage before arriving. Food and hot drinks are not allowed inside; bottled cold drinks are permitted. These details are useful if you are coming directly from York station or continuing onwards after your visit.

Worship, private prayer and lighting a candle are free. Tell the welcome desk why you are visiting. Free worship access does not itself include a full sightseeing visit, the museum or the tower. Check the service calendar separately, particularly around Advent and Christmas when capacity may be limited.
